"

The Dominants will resist –

powerfully.

They will wonder what the fuss is all about.

For them there is no problem,

nothing to solve,

nothing to fix.

Their culture is invisible to them;

it is the water in which they swim,

the air they breathe.

The Dominants are offended

when their culture is made visible,

when it becomes an option

rather than the way things are.

"

-an excerpt of a poem (“Dominant/Dominated”) by Barry Oshrey (1995)

remind you of the games industry and gamer culture at all?

(the correct answer is: yes)

Quote
"Against the panorama of large events and seemingly unchangeable forces of society at large or of nature the individual often feels lost and hopeless. One coping mechanism is to dream an individual fantasy which provides a sense of meaning and significance for the individual and helps protect him from the pressures of natural calamity and social disaster. The rhetorical vision serves much the same coping function for those who participate in the drama and often with much more force because of the supportive warmth of like-minded companions."

-Ernest Bormann, providing an explanation for why memes are so popular in the chaotic age of the internet…

…back in 1972, before the internet was even a thing

I’m getting crazy excited for the Popular Culture Association’s 2013 conference. How do I pick between going to sessions on Skyrim/GTA/other mods and going to sessions on furries? Or the Korean wave? I lamented about this “problem” on Twitter, and the PCA responded to me, saying, “Get a Time-Turner.”

I’m going to miss academia. ♥

Can we finally understand this as a society?

Expecting a 17/18 year old to know what they want to do for the balance of their lives is ludicrous.

I’m TA-ing for COMM 3431: Persuasion Theories this semester. My first job was to go through all the embedded Moodle links to make sure they’re still live. This was the first page I actually stayed on to watch/read the whole way through. I’m simultaneously incredibly interested and incredibly terrified.

Got my city’s community ed brochure in the mail today. This was in it. I’m not sure if I like it a lot or I hate it.
